“New Titles” is a collaborative project between Chad Andrews and Lori Crossley. The idea started through a conversation about how one approaches art making. The artists’ mutual interest in the Exquisite Corpse, chance, and humor lead to a body of work that is both sharing and secretive.
Lori has been using verses from the Book of Genesis as inspiration for her work. Chad often uses lyrics from popular songs and snippets from everyday conversations for his titles. In discussions about the “New Titles” series, the idea of combining verses from the Book of Genesis and lyrics from Britney Spears was decided upon as a theme for this particular show. The book of Genesis and Britney Spears lyrics do not necessarily have anything in common; they may even be opposite each other on the literary scale. However, both writings are influential, open for interpretation, thought provoking and both, whether good or bad, act as a moral compass.
To begin, titles for the finished pieces were chosen. The process of picking and matching titles relied on chance and throwing darts at a page of quotes from Genesis and a page of Britney Spears lyrics. Where the darts landed on the page is what was combined into a sentence or statement to make up the title. Forty titles were originally matched, then narrowed down to ten working titles. Chad and Lori began working on the “New Titles” series in their personal studios, each not knowing how the other interpreted the titles. The Eckhaus Gallery has made the decisions of placement and arrangement for this exhibition. Chad and Lori have not seen the final installation prior to the opening reception.
