In December 2011, when pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang first arrived at Edinburgh Zoo, there followed a brief period when the pair acclimated to their new habitat and thus were not on show to the public. To maintain momentum and keep anticipation high, Edinburgh Zoo launched a competition on their website, with prizes including VIP panda visits, via a series of short films. Each film featured Tian Tian and Yang Guang visiting a notable Edinburgh tourist attraction and the competition was to identify all 10 locations.
I filmed and directed this series of shorts and was given free rein to have fun with them. The original films, edited by Edinburgh Zoo's in-house digital manager Jon-Paul Orsi, can be seen in this youtube playlist: youtu.be/aN36nQ6RCA0?list=PL9BA436C4404DA0DD (I wasn't involved in the introductory 'Pandas On Tour' film but shot and directed the subsequent 10 location films).
The competition was a big success, with the films racking up a couple of thousand youtube views each. They were great fun to make and remain to this day the freelance job I get asked about the most so I thought I'd put together a short compilation edit. The footage at the end of the film is from a follow-up short we made to celebrate the pandas' birthdays and the music is 'House of Bamboo' by Andy Williams.
