Winter surfing on Maui's north shore means dealing with waves that originate in north Pacific storms and build all the way to Hawaii. This video shows some popular uses of early winter waves for surfing, body boarding, kite surfing, sailboarding and, (most strenuous of all) recording by pressing the buttons on a camera while sitting comfortably on the beach.
From a distance, the comparison to insects is unavoidable -- darting dragonfily kites and fragile butterfly windsurfers. Yet up close the skills, thrills and risks are more apparent.
Several scenes show sports photographers in the waves among the surfers -- wearing helmets and fins and trying to point cameras at rocketing boards.
