This photo essay was produced for the introduction to the Castlegate Charrette, one of the events of Sheffield Urban Design Week 2013.
The video draws on Aldo Rossi's ideas of how public buildings act as repositories of collective memory and the longer that such buildings persist in the city the more deeply rooted and profound such memories become for it's inhabitants. Instead of demolishing and starting again with a blank canvas (amnesia), adaptation and re-use would maintain these memories and allow them to continue to develop.
With these ideas in mind, this photo essay might be considered as a poem from the Castle Market buildings to the people of Sheffield.
The photographs were all taken with an iPhone between July 2012 and October 2013.
