This invited proposal for Times Square was produced with Ken Smith Landscape Architect.
Times Square today is an assault on the senses. What is needed is sensory voids. Voids are created for maximal impact with a minimal footprint. Voids include the Color Void, with only black and white and shades of gray; the Sound Void, which cancels outdoor noise; a Weather Void producing oppositional weather (dry when it’s raining, warm when it’s cold); People Void, a space to be alone; a Light Void, shifting from super-bright to black light and a Plant Void (green is inappropriate.)
