On November 9th, 2007 the Operation Smile Charity Hospital in Hangzhou, China opened its doors.
In a country where:
- close to 40% of the population cannot afford medical treatment
- almost 45% of urban population and 79% of rural population were not insured
this hospital is the first and only one to provide comprehensive care to cleft lip and cleft palate patients in the country for free.
In Spring 2008 journalism students from the NYU in Shanghai study abroad program traveled to Hangzhou, China to cover the international efforts that will forever change the lives of patients affected with this life-threatening birth defect.
