The practice of yoga can be a meditation. In the MBSR course we employ three forms of 'formal' practice: body scan, yoga, and sitting meditation. In each, the task is the same: pay attention, on purpose. In each, there is a different experience. With the body scan, for example, practice and skill is developed in ability to be aware of sensations in the body in the moment. As stress arises, an awareness of stress reactivity and the attendant sensations allows for the possibility of a mindful response instead of an automatic reactions, The hatha yoga, awareness is repeatedly brought to the breath and the body in movement. Although yoga is chosen for this practice, other forms of movement could also serve and yet there are some particular advantages to the incorporation of yoga into the mindfulness repertoire.
