Scientists say they've found a new type of humpback dolphins in the waters off Australia's north.
A research team set out to find the number of distinct types of humpback dolphins, using physical features and genetic data. The Atlantic humpback dolphin has already been recognized. But the team found that the variety from the Indo-Pacific should actually be broken up into three different species, one of which is entirely new. Scientists worked around nearly two-hundred dolphin skulls that were taken from museum specimens and other beached dolphins to reach their conclusions.
