My project for the nature assignment for Kirsten Hollander's Elements of Visual Thinking I class at The Maryland Institute College of Art. The assignment entailed exploring an aspect of nature that you find intriguing and produce something in public in response to it. I chose to do a social experiment involving putting dirt on a busy sidewalk in an abstract pattern and documenting people's responses to finding nature in an unexpected location. I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment and got great responses from my teacher and classmates about it. I decided to pursue it further and turn it into my final project. But when I went back to the same location to film again and soon after I started putting the dirt on the sidewalk a University of Baltimore cop stopped me and told me to clean it up. I cleaned it up right away, apologizing and he threatened to have me "thrown in jail with rapists" and asked me how I would like that.
Let's just say I learned a lot about people's response to nature in an unexpected location.
The video titled "Tree" is in response to that experience.
