From an early age I have puzzled over ideas and images of freedom. Social constraints, political dogma, slogans sprayed on city walls, banners unfurled. I read of the imprisonment of Sartre and Mikhail Bakhtin in the second world war and their explosively contrary sensation of liberation of the spirit.
Bakhtin saw the carnival, the mountebanks and travelling fairs since the middle ages as subversive, romantic. Outside the conservative control of organised society offering a glimpse through the half open door, of delights, of pleasure, of excitement. Of freedom?
Experiments with light, space, natural and synthetic materials begin to give form to the puzzle.
