Niska 1 is the most vital link that the Moose Cree and MoCreebec have to the mainland. The ferry travels between Moosonee and the island of Moose Factory; transporting most of the essential needs of the people on the island. Petroleum, household goods, food and passengers are some examples of what the Niska 1 hauls on a daily basis when the Moose River is free of ice.
It is part of the link between Toronto in the south of Ontario and the far north of our province. The system is run by Ontario Northland and includes the bus line between Toronto and Cochran, and the Polar Express train from Cochran to Moosonee. It also runs the Station Inn at Cochrane where I had to stay overnight between bus and train travel. It is a long trip but worth every moment.
