Only a fortnight following our visit this former hostel was levelled to the ground. It lay in the suburb of Miramar, which has been transformed somewhat by the resurgence in New Zealand's film industry on account of Peter Jackson, Weta Workshop and Tolkien. We could find few clues as to the former life of the space, apart from the obvious fact that a personal television was a prized possession for residents, and neighbourly etiquette had to be reinforced by bilingual spray-painted messages on walls.
