Erin Donley and five of her besties organized their second annual community Day of the Dead celebration, held at TaborSpace on Belmont Street, in Portland, Ore., Friday, November 1.
Based on ancient folk tradition of honoring ancestors and recently passed, the event drew about 150 mourners and celebrants. After a couple of readings about grieving, loss, and the cycle of life, Jen Violi opened the altar to individuals who wanted to approach with offerings, stories, intentions, and prayers.
After each person's time at the altar, he or she signified that their time was finished with a cacophonous noise maker. The crowd joined in, creating a sense of respect, support, and community.
