Truth in Purple Light is a documentary about the most extraordinary event of my life, a 1994 encounter with the spirit of Christ. Prepared in late 2009 as a Christmas gift for a distant loved one who expressed great hunger for spiritual realization despite a lack of belief in God, the film leisurely explores the early life influences and eventual existential crisis that led me to the seismic experience, giving special attention to one influence that proved crucial: my decades-long passion for the music of Elton John.
Though consciously undertaken to help another, the process of making Truth in Purple Light ironically helped ignite an explosive period of spiritual growth in me. That maturity immeasurably augmented and enriched my understanding of many issues treated in the film, which nevertheless remains a viable factual testimonial to the encounter itself and to the struggles which precipitated it. I’m happy to share these excerpts publicly for the first time.
This clip describes how a confluence of tragedies (two young friends, my beloved German Shepherd, and my grandmother all dying within weeks of my father’s near-fatal heart attack in 1989) inflamed my unhappiness working in the field of law, leading to a deep depression and existential crisis and, eventually, to an earnest prayer of surrender.
