Amateur University students share the story of Steven Forward; dare devil and fire enthusiast.
Steven Forward is what some might call a dare devil. Storm chasing, ridiculous stunts, martial arts and fire twirling feature in his life heavily, often captured through his hobby of photography. Life is different for Steve, an avid member of Newcastle Combustion Society; always looking for trouble and danger, something to get the adrenaline pumping and the heart racing, participating in activities the average person would shy away from. He lives in his own world, his story and the events he sees staying solely with him and the few he can tell in person.
Mid 2013, enter 4 unprepared yet wishful university students, ready to film his story, his passions and help present them to the world, with the help of Steve and his unrelenting devotion to the project and seeing it through to completion.
Steve is an enthusiastic persona, bringing joy and a sense of familiarity to all he speaks with. His bubbly exterior shows how deep his passion flows, bleeding into his daily life and portraying the positive emotions he feels to the people that surround him.
From the beginning Steve was just as eager as us students to begin filming, being incredibly helpful and accommodating at every turn, presenting ideas and information about the sites and activities readily, quickly speeding the filming process along.
Some might see the congregation of people, standing in a car park in Speer’s Point Park on late Sunday nights as intimidating, but the group of individuals he surrounded himself with; fellow fire twirlers and friends were all revealed to be almost as enthusiastic and helpful as Steve himself. The group as a whole was willing to participate and work around our beginner film work, eager to achieve the best results possible for all and able to have an enjoyable time whilst doing so.
The interviews with Steve and other members of his social group outlined just how developed and deep this passion and connection was for this group of people, and how Steve himself thrives in the environment of like-minded people, helping others cultivate the skill of this rare and often unheard of art form.
Many people miss out on the wonders of this performance style; it being too exclusive, dangerous or just unheard of for it to be widely practiced. Through this documentary we present to you Steve’s world, imparting but a glimmer of the magnificence shown in the live performances, and yet portraying its danger and beauty regardless.
The zeal seen by those twirling is unlike any other, the spirit of the act encouraging them to continue to learn and spin for not only their own enjoyment, but also yours.
Many thanks to Steven Forward and his never ending ardour which drove us to continue and strive with this project.
