A Cancer Council NSW study, recently published in Cancer Epidemiology, which reveals that when all observed cancer deaths and diagnoses were compared to the expected deaths and diagnoses based on rates from twenty years earlier (1987), there was a 28% reduction in cancer deaths but a 21% increase in cancer cases diagnosed. About 8000 people are alive this year, who would have otherwise died of their cancer 20 years ago. Ageing population and rising incidence means the GP role will incorporate more cancer related issues
