Jason Smith, a college student, has an undiagnosed sleeping disorder. At the outset, Jason uses his sleep irregular pattern to establish an escape from his everyday responsibilities and routine realities; school, parents, early rising and expectations. In dream, his unpredictable recall acts as a form of relaxation and stimulation. He enjoys the sleep; the escape; and although Jason cannot control his dreams, he accepts them as an adrenaline rush and becomes addicted to the feelings and relationships he “develops” as he creates the opportunities to live a variety of different life styles. In so doing, Jason becomes so intensely involved with his new life that he neglects his life-long relationships. He knows his dreams aren’t real and is challenged everyday to control his addiction, his escape, his grasp on the world and his quest to remain within its meaning and reality and ignore the messages that his eyes and ears otherwise send him.
