Waterford is Ireland's oldest city. Once a base for Viking raiders, today its best known around the world for the fine leaded glass crystal produced here since 1783. Waterford has a special connection to America. One of its most famous native sons, Thomas Francis Meager was a leader for Irish independence. He was sent to prison but escaped to America where he became a leader in the Irish community in New York City and a hero in the American Civil War and Governor of the vast Montana Territory .
