“The Theology of Language”
Study of Acts 2:1-13(NKJV)
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole House [Temple: House of God] where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean? 13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” – Acts 2:1-13 (NKJV)
THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS CHRISTIANS FOR MINISTRY
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house [Temple] where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. – ACTS 2:1-3
• PENTECOSTA – Greek for Pentecost: Means 50 – Fifty Days after Passover; Memorial of Giving of the Ten Commandments [God spoke in 70 Tongues].
• ONE ACCORD – Unity at its Best (Psalm 133:1-3)
• SOUND FROM HEAVEN – Earth becomes its Echo
• FIRE – The Holy Spirit warming us up from the COLD of our Past; like the Fire on Mt. Sinai [Giving of the Tem Commandments]
THREE THINGS ABOUT JESUS’ MISSION
A. Jesus’ Mission is not to send us to a HOLY PLACE, but instead Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to make US a HOLY PLACE
B. Jesus’ Mission requires the Holy Spirit’s work to be declared LOUDLY and PUBLICLY, but at other times QUIETLY and PRIVATELY.
C. Jesus’ Mission requires that YOU, INDIVIDUALLY, and WE CORPORATLEY, be filled with the HOLY SPIRIT
BIBLICAL USES FOR TONGUES
1. USE #1 FOR TONGUES – A PRIVATE, UNKNOWN LANGUAGE FOR PRAYER.
TONGUES IN 2 PRIMARY WAYS
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
TONGUES IS A “HEAVENLY LANGUAGE” SPOKEN BY ANGELS AND MAN
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. – 1 CORINTHIANS 14:2-4 (NKJV)
• PRAYING, OR SPEAKING IN TONGUES – PRIVATE & EDIFIES YOUR SPIRIT
• SINGING, OR GIFT OF TONGUES – PUBLIC & EDIFIES THE CHURCH
2. USE #2 FOR TONGUES – A PUBLIC, KNOWN EARTHLY LANGUAGE FOR EVANGELISM
And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? – ACTS 2:8 (NKJV)
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” – REVELATION 7:9-10 (NKJV)
3 MOST COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GIFT OF TONGUES
1. Can every Christian have the GIFT OF TONGUES
2. Does Destiny Church BELIEVE the Gift of Tongues is for TODAY
A. CESSATIONISM – Teach Certain Supernatural Gifts Ceased around the Turn of the First Century
B. CONTINUATIONISM – Teach that the Supernatural Gifts Continue today
3. What Happens when PRIVATE use of Tongues goes PUBLIC?
Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” – Acts 2:13 (NKJV)
