The Restaurant Opportunity Center was founded after September 11, 2001 by the surviving restaurant workers from Windows On The World. 73 Windows On The World workers died on 9/11. They began as a mutual support group helping each other to find work, and training each other for better jobs. Waiters trained dishwashers the skills to get better paying “front of the house” jobs. Today, the center is improving working conditions for thousands of the nation’s low-wage restaurant workforce nationwide. Sekou Siby, a kitchen worker at Windows On The World and now Deputy Director of ROC United, accepted the Robin Hood Heroes’ award on its’ behalf.
