"The Mothers" is an essay film that uses a family photograph as an entry point to examine the period of Late Socialism in Russia. In this excerpt, the film links underground publishing in Russia, known as samizdat, and the protagonists of the film—the two women, referred to as “the mothers” in a family photograph—who read a self-published copy of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita.
