On a crisp but not too cold night, FC's goal machine Michael Norton settled this close cup encounter. His blocked shot on 10 minutes was only partially cleared leaving Astley Mulholland to round the keeper and smash home from three yards out.
Almost straight away Rammy replied from a corner as Billy Priestley's header levelled the tie, but it was the Reds with the better of the chances as the game progressed.
And it was fans fave Norton who capitalised from an FC flag-kick just past the hour, when a Tom Davies flick on was latched onto and slammed into the Rammy net.
The Reds had a number of half-chances as the game continued, but with no more serious attempts, Margy's men progress into the second round of the league cup.
