TransCanada employees, family and friends participated in the recent JDRF 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes in Houston, Texas.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation event drew more than 15,000 walkers and as a chief sponsor, TransCanada was out front and center leading the fight against the disease.
According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 25.8 million people in the U.S., or 8.3 percent of the population who have the disease. It also affects more than three million Canadians.
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations, and new cases of blindness among adults in the U.S.
It is also a major cause of heart disease and stroke, and is the seventh leading cause of death.
So far, the TransCanada team has raised more than $45,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. TransCanada will match the fundraising total up to $15,000 through the company's Empower program.
