Corants is a collaboration with and portrait of the Viola da gamba player Liam Byrne. Shot in London (2013), this film arises from a discussion around early and experimental music between the artist and the musician and is conceived of in two parts. The first part of the film depicts Byrne’s domestic environment, as he tunes up and describes off-camera the history and architecture of his instrument and the music. In the bell tower of St Mark’s (Islington), Byrne then plays two Corants - one ‘dreamy’ and the other ‘lively’ - by the 16C. English composer Alfonso Ferrabosco the younger.
