I was in Galway visiting family and decided to drop in on the Crane bar as I often do to watch a music session on a Saturday night. Towards the end of the evening this poet, Pat Carthy, stood up to a hushed silences and delivered a magnificent performance. I took down his name from the barman but since then I have never been able to track him down despite frequent visits when I am in Galway. No one seems to know who he is for sure. He told a story about faries and disappeared into the night like a ghost.
In 2013 my debut feature documentary about Irish band The Frames led by Glen Hansard, 'The Frames In The Deep Shade', was released and I used this sequence in the film. The idea of using it came late in the edit because the film itself was inspired by this clip, we took it as a point of reference for how I should make an art film about The Frames. This performance seems to have it all and inspired me to make a film about artists, musicians and of course poets. I made a concerted effort in 2012 to find Pat before the film was released and am very interested in tracking him down so if you know who he is and where to find him please get in touch.
