Tais are traditional weavings made by the women of Timor Leste. This video outlines the work that goes into making these culturally important weavings- from creating the dyes from naturally sourced ingredients to the painstaking hours at the loom to the end product.
Further more, Melbourne eco-friendly fashion designer- Kat Ashworth, Creative Director of Citizens of Elysium, underwent a designer in residence at the ETWA (East Timor Women Australia) centre in Los Palos, Timor Leste in 2012. Living and working with the local women, Kat got an understanding not only of the process of Tais making, but also of their spiritual and cultural importance to the East Timorese people.
Kat designed a range of clothing whilst in Timor Leste and also organised the first photoshoot of it's kind to be held in the country.
