Welcome to the West
(Performed by Jennifer Crighton and Danny Vescarelli)
I wrote Bee Balm while reading articles about the Colony Collapse Syndrome affecting the European honey bee. Until then I didn’t know that it is common practice to wake the bees up early and that they are then trucked all over the country because monoculture crops do not provide the natural diversity to support a healthy bee hive. Bees are overworked and underpaid.
I was thinking rather romantically about the kind of person who is attracted to being a beekeeper and that with their crazy outfits and smoking cans they must be kind of a joke to the regular farmers (who, as irony would have it, cannot function without the service of the bees). In my imagination, beekeeping is a delicious mix of danger and delight as the keeping of bees is complicated and comes with the potential of being stung, but the payoff is oh so sweet.
Bee Balm is also possibly the first love song I wrote for Danny. It has grown to represent my love for Alberta, bluegrass and anyone who feels strongly about working or walking the land.
