"bottom up" - Energiewende „von unten“ - ein Dokumentarfilm, der zivilgesellschaftliche Initiativen, Aktivistengruppen, Bürgerbeteiligungen, letztlich die ganze Bevölkerung als Akteure eines globalen Umdenkens, eines Paradigmenwechsels, ins Auge fasst.
Ein Denken weg von den großen Mächten, Politik und Wirtschaft, hin zu individuellem Engagement. In vier Kapiteln kommen AktivistInnen und ExpertInnen zu Wort, die sich in verschiedenster Weise dem Thema Nachhaltigkeit, Bewusstseinsbildung und Energie verschrieben haben:
Sie sprechen über ihren jahrzehntelangen Kampf gegen die Atomindustrie, hinterfragen die Wasserkraft als „saubere“ Energieform, zeigen Pros und Kontras der Windenergie auf und werfen schließlich einen Blick in die Energiezukunft, die von der heutigen jungen Generation getragen wird.
"bottom up" lädt zum Nach- und Überdenken des eigenen Handelns ein, ohne dabei den "einen" Lösungsvorschlag liefern zu wollen. Mit einer kritischen und unkonventionellen Sicht auf eines der herausforderndsten und komplexesten Themen unserer Zeit.
Dieser Dokumentarfilm ist das Produkt einer Kollaboration von 13 Masterstudierenden des Fachbereichs Kommunikationswissenschaft der Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg, welche im Rahmen des Masterprojekts „The Changing Energy Paradigm and the Media“ das Themenfeld theoretisch erarbeitet und in weiterer Folge die Ideen zum Film konzipiert und praktisch umgesetzt haben.

"bottom up" is a documentary that poses an important question: if the energy paradigm - the patterns of supply and consumption of energy in Austria - should undergo a process of radical change, how would this be characterised and influenced by the people that are the most affected? Given that many radical changes happen as a result of the engagement of young generations, the complex task of reporting about this issue was handed over to a group of master students of the University of Salzburg, who successfully manage to provide a critical and fresh outlook, and to communicate effectively with an audience that is young and composed of non-experts in this area.
In order to reach their objectives, the makers of "bottom up" investigate the role of civil society’s members, which are individuals that freely and unselfishly engage in this particular quest for a better future, and they report their opinions and explain their motivations. In more details, this documentary reviews the role of anti-nuclear movements, including PLAGE, discusses with several experts the pros and cons of water and wind as alternative sources of energy, and reports about different activities that are carried out in the country in order to educate the future generations.
In the end, "bottom up" suggests that there is no simple or straightforward solution to the provision of abundant, clean and safe energy: every technology and solution presents some shortcomings, so that the benefits for some can be outweighed by the price paid by others. Therefore, radical changes to the energy paradigm should be the consequence of a debate between a variety of stakeholders, the result of a collaborative social agenda and responsible actions by individuals.
