To present a proclamation declaring November as "Sikh Awareness Month" in the City of San Jose and recognize the contributions of Sikh Americans in the local community. Following the tragic shooting at the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin., Council member Ash Kalra introduced a proclamation to bring greater awareness of the Sikh community and defend against hate crimes. The proclamation was the first of its kind in the City of San Jose and served to honor the lives that were lost on Aug. 5, 2012, as well as enhance the relationships between the many cultures and religions that make the Bay Area so richly diverse.
Community leaders and organizations will be in attendance to accept the proclamation on behalf of the Sikh community, including Sikh Scouts Troop 600, the first Sikh Scouts Troop in the country. The Sikh Gurdwara San Jose, the largest Sikh temple in North America, is the charter organization for the Sikh Scouts.
