September 21-24, 2013
Bighani Mountaineers presents our supposedly 2-day hike turned 4-day trek though raging rivers and heavy rains during the wrath of September's "habagat" or monsoon rains in the Philippines. A boat was supposed to pick us up at the shore of Silanguin Cove on our second day, but due to the huge waves, it was not able to make it and we were forced to stay at a local's house with limited food and clothing. On the third day, we decided not to wait for the weather to calm as we see no sign of it. We packed our bags and headed back to the mountains hoping to get to the jump-off before dark, but we had to cross a number of overflowing streams and explore new trails to avoid the wide and dangerous rivers. It took us about 12 hours to reach the second to the last river near the jump-off. Unfortunately, it was too dark already and the river was too wide and it was flowing fast. We had to do an emergency camp somewhere elevated but near the river. We slept through the cold, hunger and muscle pains. So no more river crossings for Bighani in the meantime and absolutely no more climbing on a stormy weather. :P
