Popeye has a daily ritual of photographing early morning ocean and cloudscapes on the NSW South Coast. Setting off in darkness, he never really knows what the morning will bring. Guided to different locations by his 'inner voice', Popeye is often rewarded with stunning photos of whales, dolphins and surfers in a kaleidoscope of colours. On a good morning, he's known to shoot up to 1200 images in a two hour session. Not only does this daily visual feast bring him immediate joy, Popeye has also discovered the joy of sharing, community, respect for nature, patience and a greater sense of happiness.
I was lucky to be a part of an ABC Open Project called 'My Crazy Passion', which inspired me to make a video about Popeye, an iconic Mollymook/Ulladulla local who's up before dawn each day taking ocean, whale, dolphin and surfing photos.
While my eight year old video camera didn't really do Popeye's images justice, I'm so glad I had the opportunity to share his story. I have put in a Christmas request for a DSLR so I can continue creating stories, with better quality visuals.
