It's all about money.
High school students learn something their parents already know. Life is extremely expensive!
Students from The Mendez Learning Center in Boyle Heights were bused to Finance Park in Los Angeles. They pulled out their calculators and began crunching numbers. It's all part of a Junior Achievement program on budgeting. The freshman were assigned jobs, kids to feed and bills to pay.
The President and CEO of J.A. says, "It's a good lesson for them to learn and we often have parents come back and say thats such a great lesson, can we learn it as well?"
Part of the goal is to teach students the difference between wants and needs.
After their sessions, the students say they have a completely new grasp of how hard their parents are working.
As you know by now, every Monday we recognize a person or a program making a difference in the community, if you have any suggestions, please send me an email.
