Reciprocal Teaching - RT3T™ Kaupapa Animation

RTeach Institute

Reciprocal Teaching 3 Track - RT3T™ is a science-based school-wide inclusive strategy that can work for all ages, all cultures, and empower learners for life.

RT3T™ builds on the concepts of Reciprocal Teaching / Whakaako Tauutuutu, and is a compact way of teaching and coaching one another, with everyone becoming skilled and confident as both a teacher and a learner.

The kaupapa of RT3T™ is represented by the RT Rākau Kōrero™ or talking stick. A talking stick is used in many indigenous cultures as a powerful communication tool that supports respect and focus during gatherings.

Shaped as a waka, the RT Rākau Kōrero™ is named:

He waka o puritia, ā-mahere, a-ariā

the waka that holds the conceptual map.

At the head (tauihu) of the waka is the RTeach logo. The mother of pearl inlays represent everyone learning together within a safe kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) learning environment.

Within the logo is a four-coloured pāua inlay, representing the four thinking skills that tamariki and rangatahi need for academic and everyday learning.

These thinking skills are further represented across the rākau kōrero by four animals:

The aihe (dolphin) represents clarifying. Aihe are renowned explorers who like to check if they need any further information.

The pīwakawaka (fantail) represents questioning. The pīwakawaka is well known for being inquisitive, nimble and sharp of mind.

The kea, carved as a manaia, represents summarising. Kea are enthusiastic learners that skilfully combine prior and new knowledge to bring the most important information together.

The ruru (morepork) represents predicting. The ruru is thoughtful and alert, ready to predict what may happen next.

Reaching the taurapa of the waka we find many more mother of pearl inlays than at the tauihu, showing more and more learners developing a culture of confident and competent thinking, literacy and leadership skills.

Finally, looking beneath the waka at the kaunaroa, we find a puhoro pattern symbolising the surge forward together to reach new outcomes and horizons.

He waka eke noa!

We're all in this waka together!

Reciprocal Teaching 3 Track (RT3T™) coaches and extends learners into critical thinkers for life.

With RT3T they accelerate in content learning, literacy, language learning, thinking and meaning-making skills. Results in schools show the lasting impact.

Empowered by new communication and teamwork skills, everyone gains different perspectives, enabling them to handle everyday situations they will come across in the wider world.

RT3T™ changes the way teachers teach and students learn, transforming schools, whānau and communities to actively engage, learn and grow together.
