This video is my first run with the BeSteady 3-Axis camera gimbal (stabilizer). Shooting on rough uneven terrain and running along side, with the star of the film Mr. B, really pushed the gimbal.
Testing was done with two different camera and lens weight loads. The lighter load is a GH3 with Pany/Leica 25mm f1.4 and a Oly 12mm f2.0. The heavier load is a D800 with Nikkor 24mm f2 ais, and 50mm f1.2 ais. Surprisingly the heavier weight felt more stable and the follow moves more fluid.
This was shot last week with the 1.0 firmware. There are some obvious problems with the tilt during quick moves, or me stumbling over rocks and branches. This week BeSteady released firmware version 1.2, and it's noticeably improved. Especially on the lighter weight load and tilt follow.
Overall I'm really pleased with the 3-axis gimbal rig and the experience with the team at BeSteady. It's a great tool to have in the bag, and for me coming from multi axis motion control rigs using a gimbal really is like flying free.
I'm looking forward to adding a remote follow focus to the rig and shooting my next narrative short with this combo.
