This is a video of Addison Hempel's Bronchoscopy that was taken at Children's Hospital of Oakland on December 10, 2009. Addi suffers from Niemann Pick Type C disease, a genetic disease that causes the inability to process cholesterol in the cells. It appears that Addi may have xanthomas - little cholesterol nodules developing in her lungs. Interestingly, xanthomas are not a feature in NPC so we are not sure why there are there and they would be a rare symptom to happen in the lung and mostly occur in hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia is an elevation of lipids in the bloodstream but the girls do not have elevations. Addi's identical twin Cassi also has these but they are not as severe.
