Kevin Roy is an Associate Professor of Media Arts at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon. He is an experimental filmmaker who creates interactive films. In his latest body of work, Professor Roy is primarily concerned with synthesizing digital processes with tactile analog sources. The result is a synthesis between the traditions of narrative filmmaking practice and experimental methods. Professor Roy's work has exhibited at major festivals around the world and he continues to explore the novel results derived from convergence of new and old media.
'The Following Preview' tracks the rhythms and cadence of a Hollywood movie trailer that was rescued from a movie theater dumpster. Hand painted color abstractions are activated across the screen. At times, the rhythm is frenetic while at other times is languid and smooth. The underlying film trailer, from the hit film 'Wild Hogs', underpins the film's rhythm and dynamism, and often breaks through the paint as a remnant of the original film. In this context the movie trailer becomes a cultural artifact, a 'throw-away' toxic by-product of the pop culture machine, to be reused, remixed, and renewed.
