A Cozinha da Casa do Vapor is a collateral project of the Casa do Vapor project, based in Cova do Vapor.
[Steam House] is an assemblage of core elements and satellite projects by different people and groups created by members of EXYZT, the Associação de Moradores da Cova and many more.
Cova do Vapor is a self-built neighbourhood just outside Lisbon, a fishermen’s village within Lisbon’s Tejo estuary which stands out for its strong sense of community and unique architectural heritage based on a tradition of self-building.
The building process of the Cozinha do vapor reflects the Cova do vapor one :
Most of the pinewood was previously used by Exyzt for the support structure Construir Juntos (Building Together) which hosted the Curator’s Lab of Guimarães Capital of Culture 2012.This wood was subsequently taken to Cova to be reused in the construction of most of the element.
The construction and maintenance of the Steam House was done in close collaboration with the Cova do Vapor Residents Association, which is responsible for coordinating the all the activities and maintenance works of village.
We choose Food as a medium.
Food, kitchen, is one of the strongest component of « a culture », recognized by the majority of a country's social classes, a universal necessity and right, understandable and shareable by all. As a set of knowledge and custom, it stands for a system of values, social practices and sharing, the all make it up by material and intangible aspects. His development itself is due thanks to exchange and new horizons.
Consequently, it reflects the concept and goal of Casa do Vapor.
We define our cultural work and social issue by the complementarity of the construction acting and mediation, the material and the intangible side. Part of a temporary project, we aim to produce lasting tools in a sustainable way :
Finishing to build the kitchen and his completion, building a wood oven with wood from Guimaresh.
Set up a food network against waste in a local scale, providing the kitchen collective meals and boost social cohesion.
The approach as a non profit space, isn't obvious for all. Installation involves new uses and it's one of the challenging side of the project : to activate new pratices based on the top of social dimension.
The traditionnal scale and dimension also have his bundle of constraints, formalistic rules may standardises the habits maybe more than in big city context.
The kitchen also became a place of interaction and education for children : as a closed space rulled by adults they changed behaviours (no fight and insult), get to eat a lot of vegetable and international recipes they aren't use to.
Consequently in this contexte, that 's the upstream and downstream work done that allows the efficiency, coherence of the project. It's also enable to legitimate the social intervention in a temporary session.
That's the collective dimension.
