Stacey Woodward is a local photographer with a big heart. Several years ago she heard about an event called Help Portrait which brings together photographers and makeup artists who volunteer so that families and individuals can receive professional photographs free of charge. When she couldn't find a local event in Phoenix to participate in, she decided to organize one herself. We met Stacey at a wedding we captured several weeks ago, and she invited us to participate.
When I arrived the morning of December 7 to a local shelter where the event would be held, Stacey was working hard with the help of her parents and other volunteers to make sure we would be ready to go in time. What I witnessed throughout the day was nothing short of beautiful. Professional photographers, makeup artists, and stylists from around the valley gave up their Saturday to bless those in need. Some of the families who arrived from various shelters had never had a professional photograph taken.
Even more beautiful is knowing that this was only one of hundreds of similar events happening around the world on the same day. I feel honored to have been able to share this highlight of the event, and I encourage you to check out the Help Portrait website and see how you can participate too.
Being a part of Help Portrait reminded me that we all can give out of our excess. It may not be money, but we all have something we can contribute to those in need. I witnessed the volunteers giving their time, love and dignity to families and individuals who probably aren't used to being cared for so well - and I think that was more than enough.
