About 80 % of e-waste from developed countries is sent for recycling to developing world. It is recycled by hundreds of thousands of informal workers. This e-waste dump site directly employs 25 000 people and has impact on livelihoods of more than 200 000 others. About 40 % of workers in Abogbloshie are children under the age of 18. Many come from Northern Ghana and neighbouring countries, trying to escape poverty, altreatment and food insecurity. Most of the child labourers are boys aged 11 and older. Child labourers as young as 5 years old have also been found working in the site. Young girls usually sell beverages. Children have about eight times the risk of adults when exposed to heavy metals. High levels of cadmium and lead have been measured in blood of children living around the e-waste site.
