On Nov. 5. 2009, a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas left 13 dead and more than 30 wounded. in August 2013, Nidal Malik Hasan was convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder, 32 counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to death.

Chief Warrant Officer Christopher Royal was shot twice in the back. He initially escaped, but when he returned to help he encountered Hasan, a Major at the time. Still living in Killeen, Royal fights a daily battle with PTSD. He was forced to medically retire from the Army after 17 years of service including four tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.
