One of my favorite authors is Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Even though "The Yearling" is by far the best known of her books, I love "Cross Creek." "Cross Creek" tells the story of Rawlings move from New York to a rural Florida orange grove during the 1930's to write. She wrote of the people she encountered and life in an orange grove. In the photos, I tried to capture the places and things she wrote about in "Cross Creek" like having the first indoor bathroom in the area. After "Cross Creek" Rawlings wrote a companion book, "Cross Creek Cookery" detailing many of the recipes featured in the book. The kitchen looks as though Rawlings will be walking in shortly to begin cooking. The little house in the back of the garden still looks as though the grove workers will be returning any minute. The state of Florida maintains the house and grounds as a Florida Sate Park. There is also a movie, "Cross Creek" based on the book. It is quite good.
