"Created for the Weekend Challenge: vimeo.com/groups/weekendchallenge” This week’s theme is ‘Untranslatable’.
From the list of expressions Vimeo presented, I chose this one:
L'esprit de l'escalier — (French) The predicament of thinking of all the things you should have said just after you've left the conversation.
My film takes place on the ACC Alpha sim in the 3D virtual world of Second Life, as well as a couple textures taken from a miniature clay city I sculpted for a garden. The sounds were taped on the streets, and I composed the music on Logic Pro X.
When I saw this expression offered in French, I couldn’t resist basing my short film on that. I had fun playing around with the concept of retorts. Not only referring to single encounters, but on the long run, with the sense of lost opportunities. I read my text in French, but provide the translation below:
FILM'S TEXT IN ENGLISH
I find myself sitting on the same stairs several times a day.
And each time, I am approached by someone with the question “What is life?”
Only after that person leaves, do I come up with the right response.
Day after day after day, responding on cue fails me.
But, I do know the answer. I know it, you see. It’s this:
Life is L’esprit de l’escalier (spirit of the stairs: see the meaning of that example above).
