ASSISTS, started by Albert Ruenes MD, is a nonprofit foundation that has partnered with other organizations and medical training and equipment companies to create a DVD-based surgical training program to educate African surgeons to treat the widespread problem of obstetric fistula in the developing world.
This film explains the heartbreak of fistula, documents the making of the training module, and was filmed at the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It features Dr. Catherine Hamlin, who has devoted her life to treating fistula patients in Ethiopia and founded the hospital there with her late husband in the 70's, specifically for fistula patients.
So important is the work she's done that NYTimes columnist Nick Kristoff recently suggested that Dr. Hamlin be nominated for the Nobel Prize. Directed and filmed by Bob Krist. Edited by John N. Campbell. Music by Christopher Ruenes. To help, visit assists.us.com
