It’s a wild time in wireless. The telecom industry currently undergoing a number of major upheavals: an expensive transition from legacy copper-era equipment to all-IP networks, major reorganizations in both wireline and wireless business models and infrastructure, and revenue streams being continually hammered by competition from Over-The-Top (OTT) players like Skype, Viber, LINE, and WhatsApp.
What is a telecom, or any real-time communications company, to do? Globally, as the engines that drives the mobile web and Internet-of-Things, they need to be solid but flexible — able to pivot quickly but have infrastructure plans that require half a decade to implement. People expect the latest and great features with rock-solid service and frequently receive neither. This is the dilemma of “9 Nines or 0 Nines.”
People want 99.9999999% guarantees of uptime, reliability, and stability. But having a mindset of 0% would allow them to be completely flexible and disruptive; to fail fast and fail forward. We’ll discuss how companies can achieve both of these goals through technological and business decisions, along with tools like Adhearsion and WebRTC, and how in the end the winner really is the consumer.
