Food waste is one of the biggest issues in the world today. According to the EPA, Americans throw away more than 34 million tons of food each year. Composting is a valuable process that keeps food scraps and organic waste from ending up in a landfill, where they don't belong. The Lower East Side Ecology Center's Community Compost Program is one of several recycling and environmental initiatives available in New York City.
