Brazil 2013
Lockheed Martin Corporation in conjunction with its team of subcontractors, has designed a 100 Megawatt Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion plant in which the Cold Water Pipe is fabricated to its entire 1000 meter length from a fabrication facility located on an offshore platform. Once completed the facility is replaced with a power plant and the heat exchangers known as Power Modules.
Lockheed Martin and the United States Department of Energy jointly sponsored model tests of the semi-submersible platform and pipe at the Lab Oceano hydrodynamic testing basin in Ilha do Fundao, Brazil in the fall of 2013. The OTEC model tests examined each of this marine structure’s many configurations for motions, forces and bending behavior. The project’s test data will be used to validate the numerical predictions of platform and pipe responses to operational and extreme waves.
