Iraq is most probably known to most of the world by the recent wars and its previous despotic regime. But for the Shia Muslims across the globe, Iraq is the land of sacred shrines, pilgrimage and prayer. It is home to the Imam Hussein Shrine in Karbala, the site of the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad . Arbaeen marks the anniversary of the 40th day after Imam Hussein (and 72 of his companions were martyred. Observance of Arba'een in Karbala was banned for many years when Saddam Hussein, was president of Iraq. But after the fall of the dictator, Arbaeen is among the largest pilgrimage gatherings on Earth. Over 18 million participated in this ceremony in Karbala on January 2013.
The ceremonies of Arbaeen touch the lives of the faithful each in a unique way. In this documentary we will meet Naziheh, a Shia women from Iraq who along with her family had been persecuted and crushed by the Baath regime of Saddam. But now her life has a new purpose and hope as she has dedicated herself to serve those who walk on foot from far and wide to the shrine of Imam Hussein to participate in the ceremonies of Arbaeen. This is her story.
