Can this really work? Playing Wii competition games by controlling Nintendo's Balance Boards using two R/C helicopters. A dual-Wii setup with two big beamers was used to host the season's biggest Wii party :)
How it works:
When you stand on a Wii Balance Board it detects your weight distribution, i.e. whether you are leaning to the front/back/left/right. Theoretically you can achieve the same weight shifts by working the cyclic controls of a remote-control helicopter.
In reality ...
... it's much more difficult and it took quite some development until it worked properly. First thing: The helicopters need weight, otherwise the Balance Board doesn't register. If it's too much weight, then the heli pitch/cyclic changes are not enough to trigger sufficient response for game control. But on the other hand, a certain minimum weight is necessary because you have to be 100% sure the helis cannot lift off, tip over, turn, etc. It's constructed in a way now that the wooden board itself prevents tipping to the front (that small piece extending to the front); to the back isn't a problem because the vertical fin will protect the tail rotor and limit throw in this direction. Final verdict: YES, IT DOES WORK VERY WELL!
