After more than a hundred years in business the legendary M.A.S. department store is going out of business. MAS, the acronym for Magazzini allo Statuto is a landmark located on the main square of Rome's equivalent to China Town, Piazza Vittorio, in the Esquilino district.
The true melting pot of Rome, Esquilino is a mixture of cultures lost in time, a non-place in the center of Rome with no exact origin or destination. Mas is the manifestation of this mix, with signs inside the shop written in Italian, Ukrainian, Albanian, Arabic, Hindi, French, Romanian and Mandarin and, accordingly, all the speakers of those languages both shop and work there. And MAS is always going out of business; at least three other times they have announced that they're going close. This time they assure us though that on December 31st, they'll lower the blinds of the four storey shop... forever!
