The Holiday Trains of Puritas Nursery have become a Christmas time tradition for many families in Northeast Ohio and beyond. The planning of the train displays begins very early in the year with actual construction commencing at Halloween for a Thanksgiving Grand Opening! 2007 was the 5th year of the Holiday Trains. An eight-foot by thirty-two foot flower bench was transformed into a beautifully landscaped HO train layout with three trains chugging through hills and valleys of live trees, shrubs, and flowing water. There was a new “rapid transit” style trolley shuttling back and forth between stations. The size and extent of the display makes for great family photos and cherished holiday memories for years to come. The display was the inspiration of, and was designed by, Karl Knopp, a good friend and commercial supplier of plants and pumpkins to Puritas Nursery. Carl, Dale Heyink, owner/operator of Puritas Nursery, the entire nursery staff, and numerous volunteers put thousands of man-hours into the construction of the displays. The train layout, which uses real vegetation, is set up in a heated greenhouse. Vegetation includes miniature evergreens and conifers, herbs, junipers, cabbage, and kale. Poinsettias add color and are sold right off the train layout. The layout evokes fond memories of Christmases past when downtown stores like Sterling-Linder, Halle’s, and others featured model trains in their toyland displays.
